Electric Classic Cars For Sale

There’s a growing group of tinkerers, racers and engineers across the country that are converting vintage cars into greener, faster electric vehicles. Despite derision from some purists, they are seeing the future of classic cars in an entirely new light.

They’re seeing a slew of innovations in battery technology, wiring components and other aspects that are making it easier to convert these classics. Eventually, we could see these conversions become mainstream, as drivers seek out more affordable and better electric choices to go green.

RBW Electric

RBW Electric is a new company that’s launched to help keep old classic cars relevant in the modern world. Founded by motor enthusiast Peter Swain, RBW is partnering with Zytek Automotive and Continental Engineering Services to produce electric classic cars for sale.

Rather than taking the traditional approach of gutting an existing engine and fitting in an EV powertrain, RBW’s ethos is to build brand new heritage bodies from scratch. It partners with British Motor Heritage, who use original tooling to create shells that are made to the same specs as the car they re-body.

Once the bodywork is completed, each RBW Electric is paired with an electric drivetrain from Continental Engineering Services. This includes batteries under the bonnet and an EV motor on the rear axle, providing a perfect balance of weight distribution for a smooth, engaging driving experience.

It’s a clever design, too. The torque from the electric drivetrain is corralled entirely by a subframe that’s welded to the chassis rather than crimping on the shell itself, while all-independent suspension ensures the car doesn’t flinch under spirited driving.

The RBW Roadster is based on an innovative platform that was developed by Continental Engineering Services, which features batteries under the bonnet and an EV powertrain mounted to the rear axle. The patented system allows a perfect balance of electric classic cars for sale weight distribution and helps to retain that sports car feel, whilst allowing for maximum battery volume.

Aside from the MGB, RBW is also working on a Jaguar E-Type convertible as well as a fixed head GT version. It’s aiming to launch these vehicles in runs of 30 as part of its EV Classic Car project.

These cars are all powered by a HyperDrive/Nissan Lithium-Ion battery pack that tops out at 35kWh and is coupled to a 70kW motor from Continental Engineering Services. They’re aimed at a discerning crowd willing to pay up to six figures for one, and come equipped with a WiFi-enabled Pioneer navigation system and a 7-inch colour touchscreen amongst other features.

It’s a great option for people who want to take their classics to the next level without having to invest in a whole new car. And the NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels are optimized to ensure a great driving experience, regardless of whether you’re in town or on the open road.

Lunaz

Taking the old and making it new, Lunaz takes high-end cars from Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin and Range Rover and converts them into fully electric vehicles. It also makes a load of other upgrades to ensure the cars retain their original character.

The founder of the company, David Lorenz, says that he was inspired by his own classic car experience to start up the business and bring these iconic machines into an environmentally friendly future. He wants to create a new generation of pinnacle car buyers who are conscious about their carbon footprint and want to enjoy the driving pleasures of these legendary cars without any of the worries that come with owning an internal-combustion vehicle.

He has been joined by former Cosworth, Arrows and Renault engineers Jon Hilton who leads the technical team responsible for creating the Lunaz cars. Using advanced CAD models, they create the electrically powered conversions, ensuring that every aspect of the conversion is technically perfect.

They begin by stripping the car down to its bare metal shell and 3D scanning it for an exact blueprint. This is done to ensure the best possible fit for the batteries and other components that will power the electric drivetrain. They then weigh the car to determine how much weight needs to go into the front and rear battery packs.

Once these are in place, Lunaz’s engineers then begin work on the cars. During this process, they also remove the gas-guzzling engines and gearboxes, thereby freeing up space for the batteries.

When it comes to the exterior, Lorenz and his team pay close attention to maintaining the original style of the vehicle. For example, he has added a contemporary two-tone paint scheme to a 1961 Rolls-Royce Phantom V, which he believes perfectly clothes its timeless proportions.

The interiors are similarly tailored to the customers’ tastes. In this case, the owner wanted to keep the car’s period-specific pink bakelite telephone in the rear seat.

Those looking to get their hands on an electric classic car for sale will need to be prepared to spend a lot of money. Prices for the cars start at PS295,000 ($395,000) for a Range Rover restored by Lunaz, and go up to PS950,000 for an Aston Martin DB6.

Zero Labs

As the world transitions towards a greener economy and cleaner transportation, many car owners are looking for new ways to modernize their old vehicles. One option is to convert a classic vehicle into an electric vehicle. Several companies offer EV conversions to swap out traditional gas-powered engines for electric motors. Whether you want to take your vintage car off the road entirely or just give it a more practical, eco-friendly makeover, there’s an electric classic car for sale to suit all budgets and tastes.

Zero Labs is one of the first companies to offer electric conversions on a range of classic cars, including Ford Broncos and Series III Land Rovers. Founded in 2015, the California-based company slottes batteries into the body of these utilitarian classics to bring them back to life and reclaim their appeal.

The company’s restoration process starts with disassembly of the original vehicle and a full overhaul to modern show-car standards, which takes 30 days. After the rebuilding, Zero Labs adds a custom upgradable battery to power the vehicle.

They also offer a range of upgrades that can help your EV go further, like telematics and remote diagnostics, independent front and rear suspension, DC fast charging and a 235-mile driving range. It’s a hefty price tag, but you get a fully restored and electrically driven car that’s reminiscent of the show-cars of decades past.

Currently, there are a few Zero Labs vehicles on the road and Roe says he’s looking to convert more to reduce waste and cut emissions from older vehicles. He hopes that converting all kinds of classics into electric vehicles will help the industry tackle this problem.

Another Californian outfit, Electrogenic, does a similar trick with the Citroen DS, Porsche 356 and Land Rover Defender. Its EV conversions usually replace the wheezy four-cylinder engine in these vintage cars with an electric motor.

With a little imagination, it’s possible to turn any car into an electric classic. There are a number of start-ups that offer electromodding services and some of the best-known are Zelectric, Everrati and Lunaz.

The main difference between these companies is their level of experience and expertise. The first two specialize in restoring classic cars for the purpose of converting them to EVs. The second specializes in making a full-electric platform that can be used to turn a range of classic cars into EVs.
