Ammonia Free Hair Straightening Cream
If you want your hair to look smooth and sleek, a straightening cream is a great option. These formulas are packed with hydrating glycerin and humidity-resistant polymers.
However, the fragrance in Mayraki’s permanent hair straightening treatment contains a mixture of ingredients associated with allergic contact dermatitis, respiratory distress, and sensitization (source). Cyclopentasiloxane belongs to the group of cyclical silicones and differs from linear silicones like dimethicone, which are safe.
Sodium Hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a strong base used in industry. It is used to make soaps and detergents, as a pH regulator in foods and for other applications, and ammonia free hair straightening cream as a degreaser. It is a white solid that contains sodium cations and hydroxide anions. Sodium hydroxide can burn skin and eyes if not handled properly.
In hair straightening treatments, the use of an alkaline solution such as NaOH is often combined with heat to temporarily relax curl and make the hair straighter. Some of these treatments may contain formaldehyde which is classified as a carcinogen and banned in some countries. The invention disclosed herein is intended to provide a safe and effective alternative to these hair-straightening products.
The invention is based on the discovery that cysteine base can substantially augment the action of an alkaline solution such as NaOH in a chemical straightening process by reversing some of the supercontraction caused by the alkali. This augmentation effect can be achieved at low concentrations of cysteine.
To demonstrate this benefit, one part by weight of free base crystalline cysteine was mixed directly with 99 parts by weight of a commercial Regular-strength sodium hydroxide-based hair-straightening composition to form Composition A. During a treatment with this composition, the intermittent modulus technique was used to monitor the progression of the chemical straightening and reversal of the supercontraction of the fiber. The results indicated that a substantial and beneficial straightening and reversal of supercontraction was achieved, which resulted in improved tensile wet break strength measurements obtained on the treated fiber with a Scott Tensile Tester.
Ammonium Hydroxide
Ammonium Hydroxide is a white liquid with a strong ammonia scent. It is used as a cleaning agent and as a solution to darken wood. It is also a common ingredient in some hair straightening products. This chemical is very toxic if inhaled. It can cause irritation and burning of the eyes, nose and throat. It can also cause pulmonary oedema, which is swelling of the lungs. It can also lead to shock and convulsions.
Hair straightening treatments have become increasingly popular among consumers and professionals. However, many stylists are worried about the damage that can be caused to the hair fibre structure by using certain technologies and ingredients. Moreover, the use of hair relaxers containing ammonium hydroxide can pose a risk to health and safety, especially for professional hair stylists who have to work with these chemicals during the application process.
The method of the invention relates to a composition comprising an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, guanidine carbonate or thioglycolate and an additional reducing agent capable of reducing disulfide bonds in keratin fibres. The method includes applying the composition to a hair, washing the hair and conditioning it. The method further involves drying the hair. It also includes applying a finishing formulation. It further involves assessing the hair for straightness, softness and strength.
Guanidine Carbonate
Guanidine carbonate is a white, odorless and crystalline substance. It is soluble in water and alcohol. Guanidine carbonate is an alkaline organic salt that is used primarily as a hair straightening agent and depilatory. Guanidine carbonate can be purchased online and from chemical suppliers. It is a slightly hygroscopic, solid compound that is easy to handle. Guanidine carbonate is a stronger base than sodium hydroxide and is often combined with calcium hydroxide to form non-lye hair relaxers. These systems are less irritating than one-step systems that use sodium hydroxide (lye) and promote a more permanent result by breaking keratin disulfide bridges in a process called lanthionization.
Guanidine compounds are also effective flame retardants and can be found in a variety of plastic, textile and rubber products. It is also a useful buffering agent and pH adjuster. Guanidine carbonate is synthesized by reacting double cyanide salts with ammonia. Guanidine carbonate is sometimes used to adjust the pH of formulations, organic intermediates and soap and cosmetic products.
Although guanidine carbonate is less toxic than formaldehyde, it can still be dangerous to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. Therefore, salon professionals should always wear gloves and other personal protective equipment when handling this compound. In addition, it is important to follow safety precautions specified in the product’s Certificate of Analysis.
Ammonium Thioglycolate
Thioglycolate is an ammonium salt and a reducing agent that breaks disulfide bonds in hair, making it pliable. It is used in perms and other permanent wave treatments for hair reshaping and restructuring, and for altering the texture of the hair. It also helps prevent damage caused by high levels of heat and oxidation during the perming process.
The thioglycolate in the Qiqi Reclaim My Time permanent straightening cream has the formula HSCH2CO2NH4. It is typically used with hydrogen peroxide to create a hair perm, which involves applying an aqueous solution containing ammonium thioglycolate to the hair while it is wound around rolls and then treating it with a mild solution of ammonia free hair straightening cream oxidizing acid. The oxidizing acid reduces the disulfide bonds in the cortex of the hair and makes it more rigid.
Acute inhalation toxicity data for thioglycolic acid have been published. It can cause a respiratory tract irritation in humans and may be absorbed through the skin. It is also an irritant to the eyes and mucous membranes. Chronic exposure can result in dermatitis, liver and kidney toxicity, and rhabdomyolysis.
The fragrance in the product contains a number of ingredients that can trigger allergies or sensitization, including phenoxyethanol, citronellol, hexyl cinnamal, and linalool. It is also preserved with benzalkonium chloride, which is a preservative that can be a skin irritant. It is produced by a process that uses corrosive phenol and carcinogenic ethylene oxide, so it’s not a good idea to use this product if you have a chemical sensitivity or allergy.
