Gel medium is a clear base used to make acrylic paint colours more transparent, change their sheen or alter their viscosity (thick or soft). It is also used by artists as an adhesive for collage.

Colors

When a product has the word Gel in it on the label, it is a thicker or more viscous product. These are usually used to add texture or body into acrylic paints and can be translucent, opaque or somewhere in between. Products in this category include Soft, Regular, Heavy and Extra Heavy Gels, Clear Colorful matte gel Leveling and Clear Tar Gels, OPEN Gels and aggregate gels like Glass Bead, Pumice and Crystal Gels.

There are a number of different sheens that gel mediums can come in, and they are usually matte, gloss or satin. This refers to the sheen that the final artwork will have when it is cured. Gloss Gel Mediums will increase transparency and add a shine to the finished work, while matte varieties have matting agents added so that they don’t have a sheen.

Artists use gel mediums as a sort of glue, brushing it on paper or an acrylic painting and adhering collage materials or ephemera to it with the intention of adding some depth to their work. They can also be used to highlight particular aspects of a painting, such as the break in an ocean wave, or for decoupage and image transfers. When used as an adhesive, however, it is important to choose the right gel medium for the job. The right one will be able to stand up to the rigours of being brushed and handled, and it will allow the adhesive to dry without leaving any residue.

Texture

Gel medium is similar to acrylic paint but without the pigment added to give it colour. It comes in a variety of viscosities (fluid, soft or thick) and sheens (matte or gloss). It can be mixed with acrylic paint to make them more transparent, to adjust their sheen or change the consistency and it can also be used as a collage adhesive. It is commonly referred to as Mod Podge by crafters.
